Abstract

794,611. Hinges and pivots. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1956 [Feb.15, 1955], No. 1819/56. Class 65(2) A ball and socket joint has a ball 14 of non-metallic composition moulded about the head 12 of the stud 10, and an annular seal 24 disposed about the cylindrical part of the stud and having a part spherical surface engaging the socket 18. A notched flange 20 on the stud locks the ball on the head. The composition may be phenolic resin, nylon (which may contain fillers and/or lubricants, e.g. molybdenum disulphide), polytetrafluoroethylene, or urea resins. The seal 24 is made of nylon, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychloroprene, or synthetic rubber. The space between the ball and the lower half of the socket is packed with lubricant. The surface of the ball may have lubricating grooves.
