Abstract

778,963. Arc-welding electrode holders. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Oct. 14, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 30548/54. Class 39(3) An electric welding apparatus has at least two non-consuming electrodes. 1 e.g. of tungsten inclined at 10 to 20 degrees to one another and arranged to work in an atmosphere of inert gas e.g. argon. Each electrode is independently adjusted lengthwise in its own support 4, and each support 4 is independently adjustable in a line parallel to the axis of the main electrode holder body 2. The supports 4 are brass collet chucks formed from brass rods and have inclined bores to receive the electrodes 1 as a sliding fit. The electrode is held in adjusted position therein by a screw 6 carried by the support 4 and pressing on a tongue 5 brazed in a slot cut in the side of the support 4 so that the tongue 5 presses on the electrode. The holder body 2 is of plastic, is rectangular in crosssection and carries within it two brass members 3 each formed from a cylindrical part and having a central bore in which the electrode support 4 slides and is locked in adjusted position by a screw 9 engaging a tapped hole in the member 3 and passing through a bore in the body 2. Straight cross tubes 8 mounted in stepped parts of the brass members 3 serve as electric supply leads and carry cooling water. The members 3 have flat faces leaving an open central passage in the body 2. A watercooled steel nozzle 12 is mounted below a plate 10 of pyrophilite on the arcing side of the body 2. The electrodes project slightly beyond the nozzle 12, and the arc may be seen through an eyepiece 15, by means of a prism mounted in tube 14 on the body 2. A two phase A.C. current is used with two electrodes. Specification 745,824 is referred to.
