Abstract

778,659. Steering tractors. MOTO-STANDARD GES. July 28, 1955 [July 28, 1954], No. 21788/55. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXIV The steering assembly of a two-wheeled enginedriven tractor can be turned about a vertical axis for travel in either of two opposite directions, the direction of driving of the transmission being automatically reversed with the structure 6, Fig. 3, mounted above the gearbox (not shown). The petrol tank 10 which carries the headlamps 14, embraces the top of the structure 6. The control rod 30, Fig. 3 when the steering assembly is turned from travel in one direction to travel in the reverse direction. In Fig. 1, the steering assembly 15, 19 is integral slidable and rotatable in the assembly 15, can rotate the shaft 23 by means of the ball and socket joint 33, 34, to change gear through the engagement of the pinion 42 with the rack 43, Figs. 6 and 7, integral with the change gear forks 45, 46, Fig. 6. A locking member 40 enables the shaft 23 to move axially only when the tongue 35, Fig. 4, enters the groove 41, whilst grooves 36 to 39 correspond to positions 4211, 42<SP>111</SP>, Fig. 6, of the pinion 42 when gear engagement is positive. When the tongue 35 is raised above the groove 37, the collar 25 moving through the fixed bearing 26 raises the bush 52 to disengage the teeth 57, 58, from notches in the ring 61 fixed to the gearbox 3 through the medium of bins 53, 54 on the bellcrank levers 55, 56 which engage an annular groove in the bush 52. The levers 55, 56 are pivoted about axes 59, 60, to fixed bearings 67, 68, 69, 70 shown in Fig. 5. The angular travel of the structure 6 when the teeth 57, 58 are disengaged is 260 degrees, the extent being limited by abutments 63, 64, Fig. 5, on the bearings 67, 68 of the lever 55 engaging the plate 62, Fig. 3. The lower surface of similar bearings 69, 70 of lever 56 serves to reverse gear on rotation of the structure 6 by depressing the pivoted spring retained lever 72 ; the plate 79, pivoted to the axle 73, is rotated by engagement of the extension 75 of the lever 72 on the end of the slot 76 and moves the forks 84 of the reversing gear (not shown). Bowden cables 86, 87 from control levers 16, 17, 21 of Fig. 1, pass through the channel 85 and emerge near the rotational axis of structure 6 to proceed to the brakes, clutch or throttle.
