Abstract

A titanium-carbon-oxygen alloy, for use as a cell feed material in the production of titanium, is prepared by melting titanium monoxide, adding to the melt titanium carbide, maintaining the reactants molten while continuously removing the carbon monoxide evolved from the melt, continuing the addition and removal of carbon monoxide until the melt has a titanium content over 89 per cent. Finely divided titanium monoxide and carbide may be mixed, pelletted and melted in an arc furnace in an inert atmosphere the pelletted mixture being used, e.g. as a consumable electrode. Alternatively an arc may be struck between an electrode of titanium carbide and an electrode of titanium monoxide the titanium enriched alloy being recovered as a molten product under a partial pressure of carbon monoxide less than atmospheric. The product may contain Ti between 89 and 92 per cent, C between 2.5 and 5.5 per cent and O between 1.5 and 5.0 per cent by weight. Specifications 711,077 and 735,597 [Group III], are referred to.
