778,054. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Aug. 11, 1954, No. 23170/52. Class 53. An accumulator having an alkaline electrolyte, e.g. potassium hydroxide, and a negative electrode consisting of a metal capable of forming an amphoteric hydroxide, e.g zinc, lead, tin, is provided with separators of hardened polyvinyl alcohol, the electrodes and separators being inserted in the cell container without being under compression so that they can expand freely, the electrolyte being retained in the electrodes and separators in such small quantity that the electrode materials do not dissolve during the discharge of the accumulator. The positive electrode may consist of copper oxide, and the polyvinyl alcohol of the separator may be mixed with polyacrylic acid derivatives or polyvinyl compounds. Carbonates or boric acid may be added to the electrolyte to reduce the solubility of the electrodes.
