Abstract

Class 53 The high initial discharge voltages of an alkaline cell is reduced by incorporating a halide of an alkalic metal or ammonia in the internal discharge path of the cell. The preferred halide is sodium or potassium chloride and it may be incorporated in the electrolyte or the electrodes of the cell. Thus in a silver-zinc cell the electrolyte may be a potassium hydroxide solution, having a specific gravity of 1 À2-1 À4, saturated with sodium or potassium chloride introduced into the cell in its charged or uncharged state. Alternatively an uncharged negative electrode, consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and the halide in liquid or powder form, may be used. Similarly a charged or uncharged positive electrode, consisting of a mixture of silver oxide or silver with the halide, may be used. When the cell is constructed in its charged state it is subjected to at least one charge/ discharge cycle before general use. According to the Provisional Specification, calcium or magnesium chloride may be incorporated instead of the above halides.
