Abstract

777,992. Finishing yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6135/55. Class 120 (3). Fibres protruding from a spun yarn comprising thermoplastic synthetic polymer fibres e.g. crimped staple fibres of a polyamide such as nylon or a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, are removed by passing the yarn continuously through an aperture which is slightly larger than the diameter of the yarn the material forming the aperture being heated to at least 350‹C. Most of the protruding fibres strike the material and are melted, the molten polymer deposited on the material being decomposed by the heat thereof. As shown in Fig. 1, the yarn is unwound from a bobbin 1 over a guide 2 through a tension control device 3, it is passed through guides 4 and 5 whereby it is led concentrically through a circular aperture 11 formed by hinged parts 8 and 9 of a metal plate 7 which is heated by a gas flame 12 or an electrical resistance wire (not shown), and is wound by the device 6. The plate 7 may be replaced by a heated wire connected to a low-voltage transformer and a helical loop in which constitute the aperture, Fig. 3 (not shown). The aperture need not be cylindrical and may comprise tapering entry and exit portions. In finishing a blended yarn comprising for example cotton or viscose staple fibres, the process is followed by a normal singeing operation.
