Abstract

777,841. Braiding. CARTER & CO., Ltd., B. & F. June 15, 1955 [June 16, 1954], No. 17640/54. Class 74 (1). Yarn coming from each package 29 of a high-speed braiding machine is braked by a pad 37 bearing resiliently against the periphery of the package with a pressure which is proportional to the package diameter, the pad being carried by a plate 36 rotatable about a bar 38 and urged towards the package by helical springs 40 one end of each of which is anchored in a hole in the bar 38, whilst the other end bears against the back of the plate 36. The bar 38 is rotatable and, at one end, has a handle 41 shaped to engage with any desired one of notches 42, the bar being urged axially by a spring 43 to maintain such engagement. Thus, by suitable positioning of the handle 41, the initial pressure exerted by spring 40 can be shown; and this pressure will decrease as the package diameter decreases and the spring consequently unwinds. The yarn from each package in a carrier 25 passes first over a roller 33, next over a member 35 which flies up under the action of centrifugal force, if the yarn breaks, to contact a switch and stop the machine, and finally through an open eye 25b, to the braiding point. The yarn from each package in a carrier 26 passes first under a roller 48 at the free ends of rockable links 49, so that centrifugal force causes the roller to exert on the yarn a force proportional to the speed of the machine, preventing ballooning and providing a reserve of yarn. The yarn then passes a V-pulley 45 and through eyes 46, 47 on an articulated arm 27, which is moved up and down by cam means to interbraid the yarns of the two sets as the machine operates. An extension of one of the links 49 actuates a machine stopping device if the yarn breaks. Spiders 13, 14 are driven from a main shaft 17, through gears 18, 19 and 20, 21 respectively. The spider 14 bears the carriers 26; and carriers 25 are driven, in the opposite direction, from spider 13 through a toothed rim 23 thereon, gears 22 rotatably mounted on the spider 14 and teeth 24 on the undersides of the packages 25,slidably mounted on the spider 14.
