Abstract
The softening points of non-aromatic hydrocarbon resins, obtained by treating cracked hydrocarbon fractions boiling between 20 DEG and 280 DEG C. containing 10 to 35 per cent diolefins, 30 to 65 per cent olefins and 0 to 60 per cent aromatics, paraffins and naphthenes with Friedel-Crafts catalysts at - 100 DEG to + 100 DEG C., are raised by heating with at least 1 per cent of maleic anhydride at above 130 DEG C. The hydrocarbon fraction may be steam-cracked gas oil. Specified Friedel-Crafts catalysts are aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide, boron trifluoride or their solutions, slurries or complexes. Residual catalyst may be quenched by adding methyl alcohol, filtering and washing with water and/or caustic alkali, and the solution stripped of unreacted hydrocarbons and low molecular weight oils by vacuum and/or steam distillation. The after-treatment may be conducted in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide and di-tertiarybutyl peroxide, in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons. The modified resin may be used in floor tiles or adhesives for wood, paper, cardboard, leather and plastics.
