Abstract
Resins are prepared by polymerizing at a temperature between -10 DEG and 70 DEG C. in the presence of an aluminium halide catalyst a steam-cracked petroleum fraction boiling between 85 DEG and 275 DEG C. (\sB10 DEG C.), in which not more than 20 per cent boils below 130 DEG C. The fraction contains 10 to 20 per cent of diolefins and 20 to 60 per cent of cyclic and acyclic olefins. The catalyst may be aluminium chloride in solid form, in solution in methyl or ethyl chloride or as a slurry in hexane or a solution of aluminium bromide in a hydrocarbon. The catalyst is removed from the reaction mixture by settling out the sludge, washing with water and/or caustic or by precipitating with methanol and filtering. The resin solution is then purified by stripping off unreacted hydrocarbons and oily polymers, preferably followed by vacuum stripping to a bottoms temperature of 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. at 2 to 10 mm. Hg. or by steam stripping. The products have softening points between 90 DEG and 120 DEG C. and Wijs iodine numbers between 60 and 100. They may be used in floor tile and rubber compositions. Specifications 732,257 and 734,966 are referred to.
