Class 86 [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for mixing two or more fluids, especially liquids which may in some cases contain dispersed solids or gases comprises a cylinder A, an inlet pipe B at one end for a first fluid, an outlet pipe C at the other end for the mixed fluids a lateral inlet port A2 for a second fluid in the side wall of the cylinder intermediate its ends, an annular piston D in said cylinder, a hollow piston rod D1 carrying the piston and guided in the outlet pipe C and providing communication from the inlet end of the cylinder to the outlet pipe, a spring E urging the piston D towards the inlet end of the cylinder and a passage in said piston opening into the interior of the piston rod and comprised by one or more ducts D3 and a circumferential groove D2 adapted to register with the lateral inlet port A2 to an extent determined by the position into which the piston is moved by the thrust of the first liquid against the piston acting in opposition to the spring E. The substances introduced through the port A2 may be supplied under pressure in which case the piston is arranged so that an increase in the pressure of the supply of first liquid causes an increase inthe area of port A2 in register with the groove D2, thereby increasing the flow of second fluid as the supply of the first fluid increases. -In order to vary the proportions of the mixture the pressure on the spring E is varied by screwing the nozzle C into or out of the cylinder A. Further variation in the proportions may be effected by providing interchangeable springs E of different strengths or by inserting washers or adaptors between the spring E and nozzle C. In an alternative arrangement the ducts D3 are inclined towards the discharge end of the cylinder A so that the introduction of second fluid is effected by induction. The internal diameter of the rod D1 may be increased down to the discharge end to increase the induction effect. To maintain constant proportion between the first fluid and an induced second fluid the groove D2 is arranged so that it first moves rapidly down into register with the port A2 and then, upon any increase in pressure it moves further down thus partly closing the port A2. To mix a plurality of additional fluids a plurality of inlet ports A2 may be provided and the piston D is provided with circumferentially separated ports in place of the groove D2 each connected by one or more ducts with the interior of the rod D1, the rod D1 then being of square section to prevent rotation of the piston. For regulation of the fluids adjustable valves may be provided on each inlet connection A1 leading to the ports A2, and the ports A2 may be formed as perforated screwed plugs associated with non return valves.
