Abstract

A porous polyethylene article is made by compressing particulate polythene into a shape-retaining body, and then heating the body at a temperature between 100 DEG C. and the temperature (approximately 400 DEG C.) at which decomposition and/or gelation will occur. The particulate polythene may be in the form of powder, granules or fibre. The lower limit of pressure is about 3kg./sq. cm. Highly porous articles are obtained by low compression and low temperatures, e.g. 150 DEG or 175 DEG C., and a low degree of porosity by high pressure and temperatures of e.g. 250 DEG -300 DEG C. During heating the articles may be compressed. The production of a cylinder and a sheet is described.
