Abstract

Shaped articles of granular material bound with a sodium silicate base binder, are subjected to a reduced pressure before or simultaneously to treating the article with a gaseous hardening agent. Air is thereby at least partially removed from the pores of the article to facilitate interaction of the binder and the hardening agent e.g. CO2 gas. The article may be placed in a chamber which is partially or completely evacuated and CO2 is then introduced, or the article may be subjected to reduced pressure on one side while CO2 gas is applied to the other.
