Class 72 [Also in Group XII] A method of annealing and cooling metal tubes and bars comprises traversing the tubes or bars in suspension through a series of aligned tubular chambers forming a series of furnaces and cooling chambers, the tubes or bars being driven by rolls in sealed housings which are disposed between each of the furnaces and between the furnaces and the cooling chambers to form a sealed assembly into which an inert or reducing gas is introduced. As shown, a tube is fed into a furnace A, through a pair of feed rolls B into a second furnace A, through a second pair of rolls B into a cooling chamber C and a further cooling chamber Ca. The chamber C may be cooled by a medium, e.g. water or air, passing through an annular space 18 between an inner tube 17 and a casing, and the chamber Ca may contain a gas which is circulated by a fan 22 through ducts and a cooler 21. The feed rolls, the upper of which may have some free vertical movement, may be driven synchronously and the speed controlled by a pyrometer at the discharge end of the final furnace operating a speed control device. The roll housings and the interior tubes of furnaces and cooling chambers form a gastight system which contains a reducing atmosphere.
