Abstract

776,774. Motor vehicles. SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 5751/54. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(4). [Also in Group XXXII] A motor road vehicle has a pair of rear axle assemblies in tandem, each axle assembly comprising two coaxial axles 1, 2 and 3, 4 and each axle being driven from a transposing gear box by an independent propeller shaft. As shown, each axle carries a pair of wheels 5 and each wheel may be twin tyred. The propeller shaft 6, 10 for the axles 1, 2 have universal joints 12, 13 between the transposing gear box and the axles. The propeller shaft for each axle 3, 4 comprises multiple sections 7, 8 interconnected by universal joints. Torque arms 18 are bolted to the axle casing and have their front ends pivotally mounted on members 20, 21 secured to the chassis frame 22. Universally jointed at 24 to the members 21 are beams 23 which are connected at each of their ends to the axle casings, such connections being formed by ball socket joints, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown). The beams 23 may be replaced by suspension springs. The vehicle may be provided with a jib crane 34 to facilitate the removal of the inside wheels, trapdoors being provided in the vehicle floor.
