Abstract

776,512. Insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 13, 1954], No. 26207/55. Class 36. [Also in Group XXXVII] An electrostatic shield 20 or other metal component in a switch or other apparatus having liquid insulation in a metal container 10, is provided with a continuous coating 21 of a substantially homogeneous insulating substance extending over at least the portion 22 of the surface of the shield or component lying adjacent a region of relatively high electrical stress between the shield and container, the surface portion having a relatively large minimum radius of curvature convex to the container. The coating may be a few mils. in thickness and of a material having a dielectric constant similar to that of the liquid, e.g. ethyl cellulose or phenolic resin when the liquid is a typical circuit-breaker oil. The invention is stated to reduce the possibility of voltage 'breakdown and examples are given.
