A staple-driving tool includes a closely coiled tension spring c having all of its coils in close contact with each other and with its lower end fixed relatively to a member a adapted to be maintained in contact with a staple in a staple guide b slidable on the member a. The staple is driven by axially extending the spring c by pulling on a handle g and then releasing the spring whilst the member a is held in contact with the staple by means of a handle l. The spring c may be guided by an internal rod d which may be integral with the member a as in Fig. 1, or may be separate therefrom as in Fig. 2 (not shown). Additional or alternative guide means for the spring c may comprise an external tube surrounding the spring. The guide means may be telescopic so as to extend with the spring c. The staple guide b is normally urged into its lowest position by a spring h. The staple guide b is internally shaped or grooved so that the staple is constrained to follow a path in line with the axis of the member a while being driven ; it may have a square, circular, oval or other external cross-section. The staple guide b may be shaped internally to receive a staple provided with a fibre insulating pad. A collar may be fitted around the spring h to prevent the staple from being driven right home. A channel or arch may be formed in the lower end of the staple guide b to receive a plant tendril to prevent damage thereto when the tool is used for stapling up such tendrils. The staple guide may have a lateral extension adapted to carry a supply of staples to be fed beneath the member a.
