Abstract

775,954. Spring suspensions; adjusting body height; preventing lateral canting. SOC. D' INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. Aug. 18, 1955 [Sept. 2, 1954], No. 23883/55. Class 108(2). A vehicle suspension system is constituted, individually for each wheel, by the combination of a source of hydraulic liquid under pressure, a hydraulic jack interposed between the wheel and a point on the chassis frame of the vehicle and connected with the source of liquid through a distributer which is actuated by relative displacement of the chassis frame and the wheel and acts to apply the liquid under pressure to the jack or to evacuate liquid from the jack in order respectively to raise or lower that point of the chassis frame in dependence upon its height relative to the wheel, each jack constituting together with an oleopneumatic accumulator connected to the conduit supplying the liquid to the hydraulic jack, an oleo-pneumatic spring the oscillations of which are suppressed by means varying the flow of liquid through passages the cross sections of which are a function of the amplitude of the oscillations. As shown, hydraulic jacks P, P ; Y, Y, are controlled by distributers J, L, U, S in dependence upon pivotal movement of levers 19 which are connected between each distributor and the associated road wheel by a lever system 15, 16, 17, the distributers being fed from a reservoir A through a continuously driven pump C. The output of the pump is associated with an oleo-pneumatic accumulator G and a by-pass D. The arrangement is such that, with the pump in operation, hydraulic pressure is applied to the wheel jacks until the desired height above ground of the vehicle frame adjacent each wheel is reached when the associated distributers are isolated from the jacks by their respective levers 19. Each jack, in combination with an oleo-pneumatic accumulator N or W, also functions as a suspension spring and is provided in known manner with valves O for damping oscillations. The levers 19 may extend across the vehicle to constitute anti-rolling devices.
