Abstract

775,682. Splitting stone &c. SELLECK, NICHOLLS & CO., Ltd. June 23, 1955 [July 2, 1954], No. 19462/54. Class 124 A machine for forming blocks from rectangular slabs of stone or concrete comprises a slab supporting platform, four straight knives in rectangular co-planar formation, opposed knives being relatively movable towards each other and hydraulic means to effect the relative movements simultaneously to cause a block to split away from the slab along the lines of knife pressure. As shown, a block 30 of concrete is fed on to a table in front of which are two horizontal knives 4, 5 and two vertical knives 6, 7. A portion of the slab extends through the rectangle formed by the knives and hydraulic power supplied to the vertical knives 6, 7 and the horizontal knife 5, the knife 4 supported by a cross head 10 adjustable on columns 15 acting as an anvil, moves them into contact with the slab and the inward pressure causes a block to be split away from the slab. The block produced has a rough finish bounded by four straight smooth edges. The hydraulic system may include a safety pressure valve and an electric safety switch operating on an electric motor driving the hydraulic pressure pump may also be provided. The slab may be fed into position by means of a roller feed path and a thrust plate operated by a fourstart screw.
