Abstract

897,412. Moulding plastics material. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. Jan. 29, 1959 [Jan. 31, 1958], No. 3248/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XXII, XXIX and XXXV]. Apparatus for the continuous casting of metal. or plastics comprises a device 1 for injecting the metal between two rolls 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and means for resiliently pressing the device against the rolls. The injector 1 is mounted on a reservoir 7 and carries side extensions to determine the lateral width of the cast strip. The reservoir is heated by a burner 14 and has an overflow in case of any interruption in the metal feed. The reservoir is filled from a vertically-adjustable spout 16 which is closed when a float 17 is at the correct metal-level height. The reservoir 7 is mounted on a carriage 42 urged towards the rolls by an adjustable spring 44 or by fluid-pressure or electrical means. A furnace 31 is tilted to feed the spout 16 under the control of a float within the spout which actuates a treble-contact switch 23. A safety device to prevent excessive filling of the spout is also provided. The rolls 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, are cooled by water circulated through passages 26, 27, 28, 29. The cast strip is cooled by air and water sprays 34 and worked by rolls 35-38. The moving strip is cut by a shearing machine as soon as one of two drums 40, 41 is full. Instead of the injector 1 having a large area of contact with the rolls, an injector 46, Fig. 9, may be used having very small, graphite-lubricated, contact areas 47. Several such injectors may be bolted together side-byside. Side walls may be placed between the injectors so that several small strips instead of one large strip are produced. In modifications, the east metal may be passed through extrusion dies, and the rolls may have one or more grooves or have their axes lying in a plane inclined to the vertical.
