Abstract

775,553. Couplings for vehicles. SENTINEL (SHREWSBURY), Ltd., and HAMBLIN, L. F. Aug. 2, 1955 [July 31, 1954; April 28, 1955], Nos. 22417/54 and 12247/55. Class 103(5). A weight-transferring coupling comprises a hydraulic ram 20 pivotally connected at 23 and 24 to the tractor and at 26 to a sub-assembly 27 mounted on a transverse pin 28 at the forward end of the trailer. The piston rod 21 is pivotally connected at 35 to a short link 36 mounted on the pin 28 and when the ram is shortened a downward pressure is exerted on the tractor sufficient if required to lift the forward end of the trailer from the ground. Counterclockwise motion of the sub-assembly 27 about the pin 28 is prevented by rollers 37 engaging an arcuate surface 38 forming part of the trailer. The brackets 34 attached to the ram cylinder may be replaced by a fixed length link pivotally connected to the tractor and trailer. Specification 775,554 [Group XXXI] is referred to.
