Abstract
922,192. Fifth wheel couplings. J. BROOKHOUSE & CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1959 [Sept. 2, 1958], No. 28084/58. Class 103(5). The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 922,191, which is referred to, but the claims are concerned with the operation of the pivoted catch members 13, 14 by a fluidoperated ram and cylinder 21 pivoted at 22. The catches 13, 14 are fixed to a cross shaft 15 pivotable in end bearings, and catch 13 has a pin 19 screwed therein which is adjustable by means of lock nuts 20 and forms an abutment for the ram. The ram is connected by pivoted links 23 to the catch 13, and when the ram is actuated to uncouple a trailer connected to the hooks 18 it abuts the pin 19, pivots the catches, and moves the hooks 18 downwardly to an uncoupling position where the trailer is released. Springs 26 connected to the catch 14 are compressed during uncoupling so that when the ram is retracted the springs return both catches to the position shown in Fig. 4 ready for another coupling action. During coupling the ram is inoperative, and the catch 13 with its pin 19 moves away from the ram, but the links 23 pivot the ram and maintain it in approximate alignment with the pin 19.
