Abstract
665,827. Tractor-trailer couplings. FERGUSON HOLDINGS. Ltd., H. Nov. 13, 1948 [Dec. 8, 19471. No .32275/47. Class 103(v) In a coupling between a tractor and a trailer, of the non-self balancing type in which part of the weight is taken by the coupling, a hydraulic lift on the tractor is used to lower or raise a coupling element thereon and to engage it with a coupling element on the trailer without the necessity of the driver leaving his seat. On the tractor, the hydraulic lift crank 5 is coupled to the draft links 1 by means of a bar 4 in the usual manner, and the draft links 1 have pivoted at their rear ends, links 29 pivoted at their other ends to an arm 26, near to its hook 27, the arm 26 being in turn pivoted at its forward end to the tractor frame at a point 25 below and just forward of the tractor rear axle. To couple the tractor and trailer, the draft links 1 are lowered by operation of the driver's control lever' 12A until the hook 27 of arm 26 rests almost on the ground. The tractor is then backed until the hook 27 comes below an eye 21 on the trailer which is kept raised from the ground by the stand 22, and raising of the draft links 1 then completes the connection. The draft links 1 are limited in their upward movement by a telescopic compression member pivoted to the tractor frame at 40 having outer and inner elements 35 and 36. A catch 43 secured to the inner element 36 by abutting against part 47 of the outer element 35 takes the unbalanced weight of the trailer and relieves the tractor hydraulic system of stress after the coupling has been made. Figs. 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the drawings of this Specification form the drawings for Specification 665,904, the claims of which are directed particularly towards the provision of means to prevent the lift links from being raised beyond the point at which the hydraulic pressure supply is cut out, so that the power pump may continue to operate some other auxiliary device. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 form the drawings for Specification 665,905, the claims of which are directed particularly towards the provision of the cross-bar 30 which limits the possible veering movement of the tractor.
