Abstract
775,299. Handbags. FERMOIR FRANCAIS. Jan. 19, 1954 [June 15, 1953], No. 1559/54. Class 133. [Also in Group XXV] A clasp for bags and like containers includes two strip-like frame sections A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, through the co-operating ends of which are inserted pivots, 0<SP>1</SP>, 0<SP>2</SP>, extending perpendicularly to their longer surfaces, wherein each of the frame sections consists of two outer rigid portions, and at least one intermediate rigid portion, the adjacent ends of the rigid portions of each section being connected by spring portions resisting both flexional and twisting stresses. As shown each section consists of a spring blade al or a2 the centre portion and end portions of each being made rigid by strips b<SP>1</SP> and c<SP>1</SP> or b<SP>2</SP> or c<SP>2</SP> to form the rigid end portions, and a single intermediate rigid portion, the portions of the strips between the rigid strips then constituting the spring portions. When the sections are separated they define a rectangular opening with rounded corners and will stay apart if the friction between the ends is sufficient to overcome the flexional stress on the spring blades. On pressing them together a point is reached when the flexional stress overcomes the friction, so that the clasp then automatically closes. As shown the frame sections overlap and to allow for this the pivots 0<SP>1</SP>, 0<SP>2</SP> pass through elongated slots in the section A2. In a modification the sections are side by side and the ends of the sections are either offset or connected by a short strip. Tabs t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP> are provided for pulling the sections apart and guide plates may be attached on one of the sections when the clasp has the sections arranged side-by-side so that when they are together they are in alignment. The sections A1, A2 may also be made by rivetting springs to the rigid portions which are then of channel shape. The spring portions or the whole of the sections can be enclosed in
