Abstract

775,165. Rolling turbine and compressor blades. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 28, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 21817/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for cold rolling the airfoil portion of a turbine or compressor blade comprises opposed rolls 20, 22, Fig. 1, shaped to define between them the desired airfoil profile, a workholder 89 for receiving a blade blank and biased towards the rolls, a ram 50 for moving the workholder against its bias so as to drive the blank between the rolls, and rocker members 34, 36 interconnecting the ram with the rolls and acting as connecting-rods for rotating the rolls when the ram is moved. The rockers have knuckles fitting into sockets 38, 40 in the rolls and arcuate racks 42, 44 meshing with racks 46 carried by a platen 48 secured to a press ram 50. The racks 46 are vertically adjustable relative to the platen by slidable wedges 64. The segmental rolls 20, 22 are journalled on shafts 24, 26 in a fixture 52 mounted on the press table 54. Counterweights 56, 58 are provided for returning the rolls upon the upstroke of the ram; alternatively pneumatic or hydraulic devices may be used. The work-holder comprises spring fingers 89 mounted on a fixture 32 biased upwardly by a spring 102 or by hydraulic cylinders. A blade blank is fed by a push-rod down an inclined slideway 92, Fig. 4 (not shown), and against a stop-plate 95 where it is positioned between the fingers 89. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the rockers 66, 68 have upper knuckles 70, 72 engageable in sockets 78, 80. The rolls may be moved towards or away from each other by mounting them on eccentric journals 104, 106, Fig. 6, mounted on gears 108, 110 which are adjusted by worms 112, 114 and gears 116, 118. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the eccentric journals are adjusted by pneumatic or hydraulic devices.
