J. L. MARTIN. DEVICE FOR SHARPENING HORSESHOE OALKS. No. 600,734.
Patented Mar. 15,1898;
aagw BY A TTOHNEYS m: Norms PETERS ca, wom-urwou wAsnmurou, a. c.
JAMES LANG MARTIN, OF MARION CENTRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING HORSESHOE-CALKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,734, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed my 15, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LANG MARTIN, of Marion Centre, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Sharpening Horseshoe-Oalks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine simple, durable, and economic in its construction whereby the calks of a horseshoe may be restored to their proper shape or sharpened Without removing the shoe from the hoof.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the machine, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken centrally.
The body-frame A of the machine is horizontally sustained and comprises a bottom 10, in which a central opening 11 is made, sides 12, ends 13, and flanges 14, which are projected horizontally from the end portions inwardly over the bottom, being connected With the sides. The body-frame A is supported at its ends upon legs 15, and a single central leg 16 is preferably provided at one side of the said body-frame. Two shaping- levers 17 and 18 are pivoted or j ournaled at their inner ends in the end portions of the body-frame. The inner end portions of these shaping-levers are brought in close relation, and when the said levers are in their normal position they will have an upward inclination at their inner end portions, said inner ends bearing against each other at their lower portions, the said portions being rounded or given more or less of a cylindrical shape.
The inner ends or shaping portions of the lovers are designated as 18, and when these levers are in their normal position a wedgeshaped space 19 is afforded between the aforesaid shaping edges, as shown in Fig. 1. An operating-lever 20 is fulcrumed in a support 21, attached to the single leg 16, or said lever 20 may be otherwise fulcrumed. A link 22 $erial No. 644,610. (No model.)
is pivotally connected with the inner or shaping end of the lever 17, and a parallel link 23 is correspondingly connected with the oppo site shaping-lever 18, the two links being carried downward to the lever 20, which may be operated by hand, and are pivoted to said lever, one at each side, ordinarily through the medium of a single pivot-pin.
The shaping-levers being in their upper or normal position, if, for example, the toe-calk of the horseshoe is to be sharpened or reshaped while the shoe remains on the hoof of the animal, the said calk is introduced into the space 19 between the shaping-surfaces of the two levers 17and 18, as shown in Fig. 1, it being simply necessary to raise the hoof carrying the shoe. By pressing downward on the lever 20 the two shaping-levers will be drawn downward and their shaping-surfaces engaging with opposite sides of the calk will roll or press the calk in a manner to elongate the same, and thereby impart to it the necessary tapering shape, terminating in a pointed or sharp lower end.
The device is exceedingly simple, yet it is practical and effective in operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine for shaping horseshoe-oalks, the combination, with a frame and an operating-lever, of shaping-levers pivoted at opposite sides in the said frame, the inner surfaces of the shaping-levers being shaping-surfaces, the lower portions of the shaping-surfaces having rounded contour, the said surfaces being also held in engagement, the upper portions of the shaping-surfaces normally diverging, forming between them a substantially wedge-shaped space, and link connections between the shaping-levers and the op-* crating-lever, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a frame, of two shaping-levers bearing against the frame at their outer ends and having their inner ends engaged with each other, a link connected with the inner portion of each shaping-lever, and an operating-lever bearing on the frame below the shaping-levers and having connection with the links whereby to draw downward the inner ends of the shaping-levers.
3. The combination of a horizontally-elongated frame having vertically-extending sides ing-lever, and an operating-lever bearing on and an orificed bottom run between the sides, the frame and connected with the links whereof two shaping-levers, the outer ends of which by to draw downward said links.
bear on opposite sides of the frame, and the JAMES LANG MARTIN. inner ends of which are engaged and located Witnesses:
adjacent to the opening in the bottom, a link J. H. MOGINITY,
connected with the inner portion of each shap- HUGH M. BELL.
