Abstract

227,219. Fielding, J. Oct. 19, 1923. Rolling-tubes; feeds for mandrel carriages.- A tube-rolling machine of the general character described in Specification 191,567 having the work blank mounted on a mandrel which is presented to reciprocating roller dies, has segmental dies 3, Fig. 5 pivoted on links 6 which connect a pair of intergeared driving cranks 4 to horizontally guided tie-bars 7, the rolls being oscillated by links 13 connected to stationary pivots 15. The blank 2 is mounted on a mandrel 1, Fig. 7, which is connected to a hydraulic ram 41 working within a second ram 19, the hydraulic cylinder 20 being mounted so as to be partially rotated during the feeding of the mandrel. The hydraulic feed cylinder is mounted in bearings on a slide 21 which is initially positioned by a ram 25 operated by elastic fluid to absorb shock. The slide carries a shaft 35 geared at 38, 37 to the feed cylinder and splined within a skew-wheel 34 intermittently rotated through ratchet mechanism 27, 28, Fig. 5, actuated by the roll driving shaft. The pawl may be loaded &c. as at 32 to remain inoperative except when thrown into engagement by a hydraulic cylinder 31. Power to operate the feed rams is supplied through a swivel socket 39 mounted on the end of the hvdraulic cylinder. The fluid pressure acting behind the rams 44, 19 first moves the mandrel and its guide 18 as one unit, till the guide is arrested by the shoulder 18<a> contacting with the cylinder bearing 23 after which the mandrel proceeds alone to permit the end of the blank to be rolled. The mandrel passes through a universal socket 16<a> and is connected to a block 17 on the ram 41 so that it may be readily disconnected and withdrawn rearwardly sideways when renewal or exchange of the mandrel is required. A pair of cylinders 26 mav be used instead of a single one and the shaft 35 may be axially stationary, in which case the driving gear for the hydraulic feed cylinder is splined thereon. One of the Provisional Specifications describes the use of a spring cushioning device for absorbing shock resulting from the action of the dies on the blank.
