Abstract
In a method of making a composite product of natural or synthetic rubber and a fabric material having fibres of a linear oriented ester of terephthalic acid and a glycol, the fabric material is coated with a solution in an organic solvent of natural or synthetic rubber containing an organic polyisocyanate and/or polythioisocyanate, the coated material is then dried, without permanently elongating it, at 250 DEG to 400 DEG F. for at least 40 seconds, and the dried fabric associated with a vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber mix which is then vulcanized. The optimum drying time is preferably in accordance with the formula: <FORM:0774722/V/1> t is the optimum time in minuts, and T is the drying temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. The drying time may, however, be varied between 1/2 t and 3t. The organic solvent may comprise petroleum naphtha, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, or methyl ethyl ketone. The organic polyisocyanate may comprise methylene bis-4-phenyl isocyanate, naphthalene di- or triisocyanate, or p, p1, p11 triphenyl methane triisocyanate. In an example 5 grams of methylene bis 4-phenyl isocyanate are added to 100 grams of a rubber cement prepared by dissolving 100 parts natural rubber, 35 parts carbon black, 3,3 parts sulphur, and 0,8 parts accelerator in petrol and diluting to 10 per cent total rubber solids. Cords of a linear oriented ester of terephthalic acid and a glycol (as sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Dacron") are dipped in the resultant solution and dried in an oven for 10 minutes at 150 DEG to 300 DEG F. The cords were then placed in moulds together with a vulcanized rubber mix and the mix vulcanized for 25 minutes at 287 DEG F.
