Abstract
774,668. Coking. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1955 [Dec. 9, 1954], No. 35222/55. Class 55 (1). Pitch-like material is coked continuously by feeding the material in molten state to a pool thereof maintained at a coking temperature removing by mechanical entrapment that part of the contents of the pool which has been coked to such an extent that it resists gravitational flow, moving the partly coked material slowly through an additiona. coking zone to complete the coking, and discharging the coke. The molten pitch enters a shell 11 from a feed pipe 12, and wells over the lip of a funnel 15 supported on an inner wall 14. Scrapers 17, rotated by a shaft 21, prevent clogging of the surfaces. Heaters 27 are arranged on the shell 11 and the wall 14, and a drain 26 is provided. The pitch collects as a pool, at the bottom of an inclined casing 32, from which partially coked material is dragged up the lower wall of the casing by flights 33 on an endless chain 34. The upper run of the conveyer is supported on a guide 38. As the flights leave the casing 32 they are aligned with an opening 42 which conforms with the shape and size of the flights. With a similar opening 42 for the re-entering flights, this arrangement prevents the escape of volatiles which are drawn off at 44. Strip heaters are attached to the outside of the casing 32 to heat the pool and to complete the coking. The coke is discharged from the flights into a hopper 46, the coke being dislodged from each flight by a member 49 which is slotted to move down on each side of the chain and push the coke from the flight. The member 49 is operated by fluid-operated cylinders in timed relation with the flights.
