Abstract

774,507. Locating faults. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY and CASSON, W. July 28, 1952 [April 26, 1951], No. 9839/51. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXVII] An insulated conductor which is earthed at both ends and may serve as a channel for fault location or for line protection or communication purposes is erected on an overhead power line in proximity to the line wires so that power frequency currents are induced in the conductor. In an application to fault location, the currents in the insulated conductor 4 and in the power line 1 are applied at each end over current transformers 11, 14 to a summation transformer 12. Under healthy or through fault conditions these currents balance out each transformer. If an internal fault occurs, the direction of the line currents at one end will be reversed and two counteracting induced currents will be produced. The magnitude of the resultant induced current is then determined primarily by the position of the fault and since the summation transformers are no longer balanced, this position may be determined from the readings of high-speed maximum deflection ammeters A coupled to the transformers.
