Abstract
774,289. Fluid-pressure engines. UNITED STATES METALLIC PACKING CO., Ltd. Jan. 20, 1955 [Jan. 22, 1954], No. 1918/54. Class 122 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] In a double-acting fluid-pressure engine the piston 1 is cushioned at each end of its stroke by means of closure elements 12, 13 carried on opposite sides of the piston and connected together by circumferentially spaced rods 14 axially slidable in bores 15 in the piston, the closure element 12, or 13, on the pressure side of the piston acting, due to the area of the rods 14, as a differential piston to urge the other element 13, or 12, ahead of the piston so that it closes a main port 7, or 6, before the piston reaches the end of its stroke and causes the remaining fluid to be exhausted through a smaller auxiliary port 10. Fluid is supplied to exhaust from opposite sides of the piston through passages 8 and 9 in the cylinder ends connected to the main and auxiliary ports. The rate of cushioning may be controlled by adjustable needle valves 11. The rods 14 are packed by seals 17. In a modification, the seals 17 are omitted and the rods packed by resilient 0-rings provided around the rods adjacent the elements 12, 13 and entering a recess in the ends of the bores 15.
