Abstract
1,271,047. Stirling cycle engines. UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO. KB. Nov. 21, 1970, No.55470/70. Heading F1S. A device for varying the power output of a stirling cycle engine by varying the mean pressure of the gaseous working medium comprises for each engine cylinder a reservoir 6, 8, 10 and adjustable valve means 11, 14 for governing a connection between the reservoir and the compression space of the engine cylinder (not shown). The adjustable valve means can be set to allow flow in both directions through the connection or to act as a non-return valve which prevents gaseous working medium from passing to the reservoir from the compression space of the engine cylinder but cannot be set to prevent flow of gaseous medium from the reservoir to the compression space. As shown the reservoir consists of several chambers 6, 8, 10 connected in series. The adjustable valve means can be used to open connections successively to the chambers. A multi-cylinder engine can be stopped by connecting a passage 28 from a reservoir relating to one cylinder to the corresponding passage 28 of a reservoir relating to the following cylinder.
