Abstract

774,057. Semi-conductor devices. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 27, 1955 [June 30, 1954], No. 18501/55. Class 37. A semi-conductor device such as a transistor or crystal diode is immersed in a cooling liquid and above the liquid there is saturated vapour and the reduced pressure at the minimum operating temperature (e.g. room temperature 20‹ C.) is at least 0.01 and at the maximum operating temperature (60‹ C. for germanium and higher for silicon) is not more than 0.9. The term " reduced pressure " means saturated vapour pressure divided by critical pressure. The Specification recognizes that it is known to use cooling liquids having a boiling point in the region of and below maximum operating temperature. The present invention means liquid boiling and high heat dissipation during normal operation. In the example a glass or metal tube 1 contains saturated vapour 6 above propane coolant 5 which surrounds germanium transistor 4. The surface of transistor 4 in contact with liquid 5 may be smaller than 1 mm.<SP>2</SP> or 10 mm.<SP>2</SP>. The Specification comprises a list of suitable cooling liquids with corresponding critical and reduced pressure values. The list includes liquids for operating temperatures of 150‹ C. and - 10‹ C. The Specification also refers to " Electronics " of October 1953 which mentions the following cooling liquids: light petroleum, turpentine, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, trichloro-ethylene and paraffin.
