Abstract

773,899. Starting fuel-injection engines; ignition systems. K.L.G. SPARKING PLUGS, Ltd. Dec. 8, 1955 [Sept. 8, 1954], No. 26060/ 54. Classes 7 (3) and 7 (4). To assist starting a compression-ignition engine, the charge is heated by means of a surface discharge sparking plug 12 mounted in the combustion chamber 10 a series of electrical impulses unsynchronized with the engine being applied to the plug so as to produce a substantially continuous discharge. As shown, the electrodes 13, 14 are in circuit with the secondary winding 17 of an induction coil 18 energized from a battery 19 through a vibrator 20. Switches 21, 22 are provided whereby the discharge may be discontinued when the engine has been started.
