773,886. Glass manufacture. GELL, P A. M. Feb. 28. 1955 [Feb. 27, 1954], No. 5828/54. Class 56 In a glass-melting furnace, "stones" are separated from the glass as it flows, e.g. towards a feeder portion 11 of a forehearth 10, by an inclined member 18 which deflects the upper part of the glass, which contains the "stones", upwardly, the "stones" being discharged through an outlet 28. The member 18, which is preferably permeable rests against or is attached to the skimmer block 15, and is carried by spaced rods 24 upstanding from the bottom 12 of the forehearth. It may be a perforated plate, or mesh, of non-metallic refractory material, but is preferably a mesh of molybdenum with square apertures of between one-sixteenth and one-quarter of an inch. one-eighth being the preferred size. The rods 24 are likewise of molybdenum and the mesh 18 is bound with molybdenum wire to transverse rods 22, 27, the latter being bound to a transverse member 25 connecting the rods 24. The slope of the mesh 18 is preferably the same as the slope of the part 13 of the forehearth. The inclined screen 18 may be disposed elsewhere in the glass-melting furnace, and it may be extended to the bottom of the furnace, openings for the flow of the lower portion of the glass being provided.
