Abstract

301,919. Soc. Anon. des Manufactures des Glaces et Produits Chimiques de St.-Gobain, Chauny, et Cirey. Dec. 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Discharging.-A device for stopping a stream of molten glass from flowing through an outlet in a tank furnace or forehearth comprises a stopper which rests on the lower lip of the outlet and is supported in an inclined position, so that flames and hot gases can pass through the outlet over the surface of the glass. By this means the stopper and the neighbouring parts are kept sufficiently hot to enable the stopper to be removed easily when the flow is to be started again. Fig. 1 shows a tank F having an outlet 0 through which glass flows to be formed into a continuous sheet. The lower lip of the outlet extends outwards from the tank front, and the area of the outlet can be varied by means of a movable upper lip k which can be raised, as shown, when the flow of glass is stopped. The stopper consists of a block a of refractory material set in a metal frame b to which one or two rods c are attached. The stopper, when in use, rests in an inclined position on the lower lip as shown, the inclination being regulated by an adjustable support e for the rods. By making the block a of suitable shape, it may be made to serve as the upper lip of the outlet, as shown in Fig. 4. When the tank is provided with a forehearth s for a feeder, as shown in Fig. 7, or with an extended spout for a tube-drawing machine, the stopper a is inserted through an opening r in the roof of the forehearth or spout which is covered when the feeder is in use.
