Abstract

A silver tarnish inhibitor for incorporation into a protective lacquer or varnish comprises a sublimable substantially solid carboxylic acid salt of an amine, the salt vaporizing and hydrolising to provide a free amine vapour reacting with gaseous sulphides. The inhibitor may be impregnated into or form a coating in sheet material such as paper, foil or fabric forming the package. In making the inhibitor, fatty acids such as lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic or linoleic, or aromatic acids such as benzoic, salicylic, or pthalic are reacted with such amines as n - octylamine, diethylene triamine, morpholine and morpholine derivatives, cyclo-hexylamine, diethanolamine to produce a salt in substantially solid form. The salts may be used alone or blended with inert materials to form crystals, flakes &c. for placement in showcases or the like.
