Abstract

Products are obtained by condensing a mono- or poly-amino-alkanol or a di- or poly-aminoalkane or mixtures of such with the distillation or heat-polymerization residue of lauric, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, montanic, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acid or of fish oil, rosin or tall oil or the corresponding acids, or esters or lactones thereof, or mixtures of such compounds. The aforesaid residue is obtained by heating the material above 200 DEG C., preferably 280-320 DEG C., and distilling off the monomer. The products of condensation (preferably obtained at 100-350 DEG C.) are believed to be amino-esters or amino-amides. Suitable amine reactants are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine, hydroxyethylethylenediamine, and mixtures of these. Examples show the condensation of these with stearic pitch (with or without zinc oxide or montan wax) and with tall oil distillation residue. According to the Provisional Specification terpene acids, particularly tricycloterpenes, may be used.ALSO:Bitumen compositions contain as cationic surface-active additives the condensation product of a mono- or poly-amino-alkanol or a di-or poly-amino-alkane or mixtures of such with the distillation or heat-polymerization residue of lauric, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, montanic, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acid or of fish oil, rosin or tall oil or the corresponding acids, or esters or lactones thereof, or mixtures of such compounds. Up to 5 per cent by weight of the additives may be present, but 0,1-0,2 per cent is preferred.
