Abstract

773,388. Photographic processes. KODAK, Ltd. June 14, 1955 [June 29, 1954], No. 17105/55. Class 98(2) A reversed photographic image is obtained by imagewise exposing to a flash of sufficiently high intensity and sufficiently short duration to produce imagewise Clayden desensitization, a silver halide emulsion which is "Clayden desensitizable to some degree" as defined below, said emulsion containing at least 100 mg/mole of silver halide of a merocyanine dye of the formula:- or a hemioxonol dye of the formula:- wherein R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> represents an alkyl group X completes a thiazole, thiazoline, benzothiazole, naphthathiazole, benzoxazole. naphthoxazole or quinoline nucleus and Y completes a rhodanine, thiohydantoin or 2- thio-2:4-oxazoledione nucleus, then uniformly exposing the emulsion to low intensity light for a sufficiently long time to render developable the regions of the emulsion layer which have not been Clayden desensitized, and developing the emulsion. An emulsion for use in the invention which is "Clayden desensitizable to some degree" is one which, when exposed under a step tablet having 28 steps starting with approximately zero density and increasing in intervals of 0.3 density to light from a high intensity flash lamp having 18,000 lumen secs. output in 0.0005 sec., two feet from the emulsion, and then exposed again with the step tablet rotated 90 degrees to light from a 1000 watt tungsten lamp two feet from the emulsion, for two minutes, shows at least 0.10 log E or 1/3 step decrease in density between an area receiving only low intensity exposure and an area receiving the same level of low intensity exposure plus some level of high intensity exposure when developed for 2“ mins. at 68‹F. in an aqueous developing solution containing specified amounts of hydroquinone, sodium sulphite, paraformaldehyde, potassium metabisulphite, boric acid and potassium bromide. Specification 699,659 is referred to.
