Abstract
1387033 Photographic silver halide emulsion EASTMAN KODAK CO 9 March 1972 [10 March 1971] 10978/72 Heading G2C An unfogged photographic silver halide emulsion of which the halide comprises more than 50 mole % of chloride and of which the grains contain internal physical sites (i.e. sites inside grains produced by. methods which do not result in the occlusion of dopants within the grains) for the deposition of photolytic silver, and is such that a coating thereof containing 200 mg of silver per square foot gives, when tested by processes B, C and D specified in the disclosure, a maximum density which is less than 0.3 in Process B, a maximum density greater than 1.0 in Process C and a relative speed in Process D which is less than the relative speed obtained in Process C. The emulsion may be surface chemically sensitized, contain a fogging agent e.g. a hydrazine or an N-substituted cycloammonium salt such as 2- methyl-3-[3-(p-sulphophenylhydrazono)propyl] benzothiazolium bromide, or contain a polymeric latex (copoly methyacrylate-sulphopropyl acrylate- 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate in Ex 6). The emulsion may be imagewise exposed, the unexposed grains may be selectively surface-fogged and treated with a surface-developer to develop the surface-fogged grains to produce a direct-positive image. The unexposed grains may be fogged by exposing overall to light during surface-development, by exposing overall to light before or during surface-development after treatment with a surface image stabilizer (i.e. a substance which enables the flash exposed but non-imagewise exposed silver halide grains to become developable in a surface developer) bath, by using an aerial fogging surface developer, or by treatment with a fogging agent. The surface image stabilizer may be a dialkanolamine, cadmium chloride, a developing agent, a tetraazaindene, sodium sulphite or bromide salt.
