Abstract

772,834. Walls; floors; roofs; multi-story buildings; building blocks. MULTICONFLATS, Ltd., Oct. 14, 1952 [July 14, 1951], No. 16765/51. Classes 20(1), 20(4) and 87(1) In a multi-storey building such as a blocks of flats the cross walls A, B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, C, Fig. 1, are constructed as load-bearing walls to support the floor and roof loads whilst the front and rear walls such as D are non load-bearing, the floors F and roof G each having as a foundation, a plurality of pre-stressed concrete planks extending between and supported on successive cross walls at inter storey and roof levels. The external load-bearing walls are built up from pre-cast double walled hollow concrete blocks having an outer wall slab 20, Fig. 8, and an inner wall slab 21 interconnected therewith by three pre-cast concrete ties 22 staggered relative to one another and each being reinforced by a metal rod. A horizontal strip : 23 of cementitious sawdust compound is provided on the inner wall slab 21 to form a nailing strip to which plasterboard 27 is secured, a layer 26 of bituminous felt being interposed. The outer surface 28 of wall slab 20 has a quasi-hewn sandstone. granite or other stone surface finish. The cavities 24 between the slabs 20, 21 are filled with' a light metal mesh and dense concrete 25. Party walls B<SP>1</SP> of each block of flats are similarly formed except that each of the wall slabs has a nailing strip and cladding of plasterboard attached thereto. The wall C which is partly an external wall and partly a party wall is built up from pre-cast double walled hollow concrete blocks of both types. The front and rear external walls such as D are formed similarly to the wall A, Fig. 8, except that the wall cavity is not filled with reinforcement. The walls B<SP>2</SP> which are party walls adjacent a common well and stairway in the building are built up from blocks, Fig. 7, each comprising an outer wall slab 35, an inner slab 36 connected by ties 37, and having a horizontal strip 38 for securing a cladding of plasterboard 27, a layer 39 of fimre glass being interposed between the strip 38 and plasterboard 27. The outer surface 40 of each slab 35 has a smooth stone finish. The floors F comprise pre-stressed concrete planks 41, Fig. 10, which interengage by means of projections 42 and recesses 43. A first screed 46 of concrete, a layer 47 of fibre, glass, a second screed 48 of concrete and a surface finish of asphaltic tiles 49 or synthetic rubber tiles or timber flooring is laid on the planks 41. The ceilings 50 are of gypsum plaster. The front and rear external walls and the roof G, Fig. 14, where it extends over these walls, are supported on concrete beams 52 cast in situ in moulds formed by inner and outer pre-cast shuttering units 53, 54. The roof G is formed of planks 41 similar to those used for the floors and they are covered by a concrete screed 57 a layer of foam slag 58 and three layers 59 of bitumen roofing material. The eaves are formed by pre-cast concrete units 60 covered with a thick layer 61 of mastic asphalt. The cross walls project somewhat beyond the front and rear walls and are covered by vertical U-section nosing units with the interposition of a damp proof course. The blocks of flats are constructed with two flats on each storey, on either side of the central well, lift shaft, main, staircase and emergency staircase, continuous vertical ducts being provided to discharge water from the roof and also house all the pipes for the sanitary system. A single refuse shoot is provided and also ducts associated with a heating system in the basement. According to the provisional Specification a sloping roof may be provided, the gables either being provided at the front and back on non- load-bearing walls or being provided at the ends of a terrace or building on loadbearing walls.
