772,658. Range-finders. BEACONING OPTICAL & PRECISION MATERIALS, CO., Ltd. Oct. 27, 1953 [April 15, 1953], No. 29719/53. Class 97(1) [Also in Group XXI] A short home-base range-finder, giving two overlapping images has an optical distorting device comprising a pair of prisms 1, 2, angularly displaced relatively to one another about axis Z, in front of each or one of the objectives 5, so that two point images of a point on the target can be made to coincide in the field of view -of eyepiece 9. Preferably the prisms are chromatically corrected. As shown in Fig. 1, one of the overlapping images of a set of parallel straight lines may be distorted so that the separation D is varied progressively across the field of view or if two distorting devices are used (Fig. 5) both images may be distorted by equal or unequal amounts. The distance of the point of intersection of the images from a base line is a measure of their range and a scale in reticle 8 can be calibrated so that the range may be read directly. If the range-finder is to be used only as a sight for a firing weapon the relative rotations of the prisms 1, 2 are adjusted so that the range callibration fits the ballistic curve of the weapon and the range scale is then replaced by a single vertical hairline in order to train the weapon laterally.
