Abstract

A soapless detergent composition contains, as a tarnish inhibitor, an acyl dicyandiamide of the formula RC(O)NHC(:NH)NHCN, where R is a straight or branched chain, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of from 1 to 17, and preferably 11 to 17, carbon atoms. Detergents which may be incorporated in the compositions, separately or together, include condensed water-soluble phosphates, such as the ammonium or alkali metal tripoly phosphates, pyrophosphates and polymetaphosphates, or the usual anionic or nonionic synthetic detergents, but not cationic detergents. In preferred embodiments, lauroyl or myristoyl dicyandiamide is used in amounts from 0.5-5.0 per cent of the tarnish-producing substance, i.e. the phosphate or detergent. When condensed phosphates and synthetic detergents are employed together, the phosphate may be contained in amounts of from 5-50 per cent of the composition and the detergent may comprise 5-40 per cent. The remainder may be made up of other builders such as alkali metal sulphates, chlorides, silicates, borates, carbonates, orthophosphates, starch, salts of carboxymethylcellulose, and fluorescent whitening agents. U.S.A. Specification 2,407,161 is referred to. to.ALSO:An aqueous solution for treating metals, e.g. a detergent solution, contains, as a tarnish inhibitor, an acyl dicyandiamide of the formula RC(o)NHC(:NH)NHCN, where R is a straight or branched chain, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of from 1 to 17, and preferably 11 to 17, carbon atoms. Detergents which may be present in the solutions separately or together, include condensed water-soluble phosphates, such as the ammonium or alkali metal tripolyphosphates, pyrophosphates and polymetaphosphates, or the usual anionic or non-ionic synthetic detergents, but not cationic detergents. In preferred embodiments, lauroyl or myristoyl dicyandiamide is used in amounts from 0.5-5.0 per cent of the tarnish-producing substance, i.e. the phosphate or detergent. U.S.A.
