Abstract
Beta-chloroacrolein is obtained by the oxidation of 3-chloroallyl alcohol with manganese dioxide in presence of alkali metal bisulphate and acid at 50-65 DEG C. in an inert gas atmosphere. Preferably the product is vacuum distilled as it is formed, and may be collected under water. In an example, sodium bisulphate is produced in a flask from sodium sulphate and concentrated sulphuric acid, manganese dioxide is added and 3-chloroallyl alcohol together with 40 per cent sulphuric acid, the reaction taking place in a nitrogen atmosphere at 52 DEG C. under a pressure progressively lowered from 540 to 180 mm. Hg. The product, which decomposes instantaneously in contact with air, reacts with guanidine to give 2-amino-pyrimidine.
