Abstract

771,913. Wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 1, 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6434/54. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). A wheel comprises integral rim, disc and hub portions 1b, 1c and 1a of vulcanite, which may be reinforced with a fibrous material such as cotton, rayon, fibre-glass, metal or nylon, and has a hollow, or sponge-rubber filled, rubber cushion tyre 4 vulcanized to its rim 1b. The wheel is formed by compression moulding and is initially partly cured and formed with circumferentially spaced radial ribs 1d. The tyre 4 comprises a length of extruded unvulcanized rubber which is applied to the roughened, vulcanite-solutioned, circumferentially -grooved rim surface and then butt-jointed prior to final curing of the assembly in a mould. A roller bearing housing comprising two interfitting pressed steel sleeves 2, 2a may be moulded integrally with the hub 1a, the axially outer ends of each sleeve being turned radially inwardly to retain the rollers 2b when mounted on a shaft 8. Alternatively a metal bush 5, Fig. 2, is moulded in the hub and the wheel is secured to a rotatable shaft by a set-screw 6. Specification 771,914 is referred to.
