A permanent magnet rotor type of synchronous motor has a region of reduced crosssection in the stator so that the magnetic circuit is saturated in over normal voltage conditions. In Fig. 6 the reduced section occurs at 112 in the polepieces 114 extending from the left-hand end of the central core but instead, the diameter of the latter could be reduced over part of its length or slots could be cut in the base of the cup which encloses the coil and carries the plate forming the other set of polepieces 116. A flux leakage path P in the form of a disc with extensions 138 projecting nearly up to the cup surface may be disposed alongside the coil bobbin at the rotor end. Specification 732,039 and U.S.A.
