771,561. Joint-making packing. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. Oct. 26, 1954 [Nov. 5, 1953], No. 30601/53. Class 122 (3). A joint-making packing comprises a core 1 enclosed by a barrier 3 composed of one or more layers of thin metal or other material impervious to liquids and surrounded by an outer cover 4, the barrier 3 serving to prevent seepage of the sealed liquid through the core. The core may be of jute, hemp, asbestos, nylon or other plastic, or synthetic or natural rubber in solid or sponge form; the barrier may be of white metal, alloy or plastic; and the outer cover, which is preferably substantially less thick than the core, may be a textile such as cloth or braided or plated jute, hemp, asbestos, soft metal or a plastic. The packing shown is particularly suitable for sealing the tank lids 6 of sea-going tankers and comprises a core 1 of plaited jute yarn surrounding an inner rope core 2 and enclosed by white metal tape 3 wound spirally around it so that each turn overlaps the next by about 50 per cent, the tape being enclosed by a wrapping 4 of one or more layers of suitable material, for example, plaited jute or asbestos. If desired, two layers of white metal spirally wound in opposite directions may be used or the barrier may be applied as a sheet.
