Abstract

Coating compositions comprise pigmented plasticized aqueous dispersions of vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymers containing not more than 25 per cent, preferably from 13 to 20 per cent, of vinyl acetate. The dispersions may be made by the method described in Specification 766,654. The plasticizer may be dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, or an ester of epoxystearic acid. The dispersion may also contain stabilizers such as white lead, calcium, lead and cadmium stearates, dibutyl tin dilaurate, organic epoxides and diphenylthiourea, emulsifiers such as Turkey red oil and sodium cetyl or octyl sulphate, a pigment dispersing agent such as sodium hexametaphosphate and thickeners such as aqueous alkaline solutions of polymethacrylic acid, cellulose ethers, glue or aqueous alkali solutions of casein. Ammonia may be added to the dispersion to adjust pH. Examples describe the use of titanium dioxide as pigment.
