Abstract
High viscoscity index petroleum lubricating oil is produced by catalytically cracking a gas oil boiling between 650 and 1100 DEG F., fractionating from the products a fraction boiling between 700 and 1100 DEG F., removing aromatic constituents therefrom and recovering the remainder as petroleum lubricating oil. The catalytic cracking may be carried out at 800-1000 DEG F. and at a pressure from atmospheric to 25 p.s.i.g. The catalyst may be a natural or synthetic clay or a gel, e.g. montmorillonite clays, silica-alumina and silica-magnesia; fixed or moving beds or fluidized or suspensoid systems may be used. Aromatic constituents may be removed by solvent extraction, e.g. by countercurrent contacting with SO2, phenol, which may contain water as a solvent modifier, furfural or nitrobenzene, or by contact with an adsorbent such as silica gel. Before or after removal of aromatic constituents the oil may be dewaxed, preferably by solvent dewaxing, e.g. with propane or methyl ethyl ketone.
