Abstract

A wax is obtained by catalytically cracking a petroleum oil boiling in the range of about 650-1100 DEG F., separating a fraction boiling in the range of about 700-1100 DEG F. from the cracking products, removing aromatic compounds from this fraction and segregating wax from the aromatic-free fraction. The dewaxed oil remaining may be employed as lubricating oil or as a cracking feedstock. The removal of aromatics may be effected by adsorption (using an adsorbent such as silica gel, activated coke or clay) or by solvent extraction (using a solvent selective towards aromatics, for example liquid sulphur dioxide, phenol, furfural, nitrobenzene or liquid ammonia, alone or in conjunction with solvent modifiers). The segregation of wax from the aromatic-free fraction may be effected by solvent dewaxing employing as dewaxing solvent, for example, propane or one or more aliphatic ketones having 3-6 carbon atoms in the molecule such as methyl-ethyl ketone, together with a minor proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene or toluene if desired. In an example, a petroleum gas oil boiling in the range of about 650-1100 DEG F. is catalytically cracked, an oil boiling in the range of 700-1100 DEG F. is separated from the cracking products and this oil is solvent-extracted using phenol containing 7 per cent of water as the solvent. The raffinate is freed of solvent and dewaxed by adding sec.-butyl acetate, heating to about 120 DEG F., cooling to 0 DEG F. and separating the wax which precipitates. Apparatus is described in which crude petroleum is fractionated to yield various fractions, including a fraction boiling in the range of about 650-1100 DEG F., this latter fraction is catalytically cracked (details of the cracking catalyst and conditions of cracking being given) and the cracking products are fractionated. The bottoms product from this latter fractionation is freed of catalyst and solvent extracted and the raffinate is then dewaxed.
